History of the Michigan Lottery

A state lottery has existed in Michigan since 1972. Here are some key events that have taken place since the launch date:

  • The first weekly lottery tickets in Michigan went on sale on November 13th 1972, for the 50-cent Green Game. The first draw took place on November 24th
  • Instant win tickets first went on sale in Michigan in 1975
  • The state’s first terminal-based game, Daily 3, was introduced in 1977. The game is still running over forty years later
  • Daily 4 was added in October 1981
  • Michigan Lotto began in in August 1984 and proved very popular. The game’s first-week sales of $3.1 million set a national record
  • Michigan became one of the founding participants in a new cross-state lottery called The Big Game, alongside Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia. The first draw took place in September 1996
  • The Big Game was rebranded as Mega Millions in May 2002
  • A new game called Fantasy 5 was introduced in September 2004, replacing another match-5 terminal game called Rolldown
  • Lotto 47 was introduced a year later in 2005, in place of another outgoing game, called Windfall
  • Michigan's biggest Mega Millions jackpot was awarded to Ralph and Mary Stebbins of Port Huron, when they won $208 million, choosing to take a lump sum payment of $124 million
  • Michigan was a relative latecomer to the national Powerball lottery, only joining in January 2010
  • In April 2014, EZmatch was launched as an instant-win add-on to Lotto 47 and Fantasy 5
  • The largest lottery jackpot in Michigan history was won by Donald Lawson in August 2012, when he won a $337 million Powerball jackpot. He decided to take the lump sum option and received $224 million
  • The first online lottery playable in Michigan launched in November 2014. The state was one of only three to offer online lottery games at the time
  • From February 2016, players could purchase tickets online for the most popular lottery games, including Mega Millions and Powerball
  • Double Play draws were added to both Lotto 47 and Fantasy 5 from January 2019. An extra draw was held after each edition of the main game, with non-jackpot prizes doubled.
